Classes come around once a week, and in between there’s school, sport, family, and everything else that fills a kid’s week. So how did last Saturday’s Mandarin stay with them until the next one?

At Pistachio, it comes down to a small tradition we never skip: homework checking, or “jiǎn chá zuò yè.” It’s the first thing that happens once everyone’s settled in.

What “checking the homework” actually looks like

We sit down with students, going over what they learned previously, and picking up the thread right where they left off. A few relaxed minutes of review will help retain the knowledge. This is our 3R signature: “Review, Repeat, Retain.“

Remembering and moving forward

Bit by bit, week by week, is how the language settles in. Because the review happens every single lesson, kids walk in feeling confident, ready to build on what they already know and move into something new.

That’s what jiǎn chá zuò yè (homework checking) really does. It’s not just about remembering; it’s what lets students keep moving forward.

Come and see for yourself

The best way to understand how it feels is to sit in on it. Our children’s group classes run every Saturday morning in Epsom, Auckland, and we’d love to have your child try one.
